Whichever 3D modeller you’re using, the likelihood is that there’s a means to directly or indirectly export to an EPix file, Piranesi’s specific image format. Once in Piranesi, follow a simple step-by-step process to creating highly powerful Non-Photorealistic (NPR) visualizations. STEP 1

You import a 3D image from a modeling package or rendering application. Alternatively you can transfer an image as a DXF file or 3DS file into the Vedute viewer (which is supplied with Piranesi) to create your starter image.

STEP 2

You begin work by painting effects, treatments, backgrounds and details onto this image. What’s clever about Piranesi is that it knows what every pixel is doing – what plane it is on, whether it is in the distance or foreground, and so on. So the experience is truly like painting in 3D.

STEP 3

Now you’ve done the basic work you can begin to bring your image to life. You can decide what visual genre you are adopting – watercolour, for example – and start to use artistic effects to emphasize particular features. If you do something you like in a particular way, you can save the tool options as an ‘style’ to use as a short cut in future projects.
